How Runway pricing works
Runway prices in credits at four tiers, with annual billing cutting about 20 percent. The math that matters: at 60 credits per 5-second Gen-4.5 clip, the $12 Standard tier buys about 10 clips a month, and each retry consumes the same 60 credits again. That makes Runway one of the clearest illustrations of the retry economics covered in our cost calculator: two attempts per shot halves your effective library. Pro at $28 (2,250 credits, ~37 clips) is where regular creators usually land, and Max adds the only credit rollover in the lineup.
The fine print
- Gen-4.5 video costs 60 credits per 5 seconds: the Standard plan's 625 credits are roughly 10 five-second clips per month, before retries.
- App subscription credits and Runway's API credits are completely separate pools and are not transferable.
- Genuine generation errors are refunded; moderation rejections are not.
- Free tier credits are one-time, not monthly.
Our take
Runway is a superb single-vendor product: Gen-4.5 is a top-tier model and the editing suite around it is mature. The trade-off is that your subscription lives and dies with one model family. The iterate-cheap, render-premium workflow that stretches budgets requires a second subscription somewhere else, because there is no budget drafting model in the lineup at entry.
